Inner Stuff
Likes:
- Writing (as Nathan)
- Crime Fighting (as Nathan)
- Partying (as Nathan)
- Justice (as Nick)
- Cigarettes (as Nick)
Dislikes:
- Being restricted by rules (as Nathan)
- Poor book sales (as Nathan)
- Writing police reports (as Nathan)
Strengths:
- Nathan is well connected. When he needs to talk to an expert he will often declare that “he knows a guy.”
- Genre savvy
- Surprisingly Nathan is naturally a better shooter than most non-snipers in the NYPD. Whether this informs Nathan’s skill level or shows NYPD’s incompetence depends greatly on who you ask. Nathan prefers to be optimistic and believe that he is just a crack shot.
Weaknesses:
- His DID is easy to trigger. Nathan can’t use Skull and Nick can’t use Garren.
- While both can handle themselves in hand to hand combat, Nathan can only somewhat muster up the ability to use close range weapons (usually baseball bats or other blunt improvised weapons). Nick actually has no ability to use close range weapons, through some mental block.
- Nick can get wrapped up in his head too often, through what Nathan refers to as the “Protagonist Commentary Track.” While it works in the books, Nick has to still dodge bullets and weapons in real life.
- Despite being able to shoot like a trained sniper, Nathan doesn’t bother and just resorts to gun kata.
Goal(s):
- Enjoy himself (as Nathan)
- Fight crime (as both, but for different reason)
Habits/ Quirks:
- Switching alters when splashed with water
- When Nathan is writing and takes a moment to think he will chew on his pen. If he is using a typewriter/computer/tablet he will still do it, even asking on occasion. This habit carries over as Nick’s smoking.
- Both have a coffee addiction. Nathan drinks his with cream and a crapload of sugar, while Nick drinks his completely black.
- Nathan will declare that he “knows a guy” before taking out his phone.
- Nick entering what Nathan calls “Sherlock Mode” – he will scan and pick apart every single detail about something.
- Nathan is constantly playing with his watch.
Relationships:
- Nick Heat: Nathan wrote him as a fictional character. Nathan doesn’t look back fondly on Nick, believing him to be underdeveloped and flat as a character, being nothing more than a stereotypical film noir detective.
- Kate Steele: Nathan’s wife, partner, and muse. He had a thing for her before she even acknowledged any attraction to him. But after a bit of time and a few bad experiences together the two grew closer and got hitched.
- Danni King: His daughter. The two are very close, with Nathan trying to do his best.
Overview: Nathan is a rich playboy, basically. Though he is grounded enough not to think he can pay his way out of jams and he doesn’t have a gigantic mansion in the alps… he does enjoy not having to ever work a nine to five. He enjoys partying all the time and writing only when he needs to meet a deadline. He has a lot of common sense and is pretty street wise, though he is a bit of a ditz when it comes to technical things. Nathan isn’t the best at planning things out, but he is great at improvising. On the other hand, there is Nick. Nick is basically your standard hardboiled detective. His emotions are hardened, and he often talks in a monotone. He doesn’t do much talking, preferring to stay wrapped up in his head. He will excessively plan out things to the last detail, though he can’t improvise as a result.
Hero Stuff

Fighting Style: Nathan likes to mix things up and fight with gun kata. He can focus and fight like he’s not playing around when he feels like it, it’s just not something that happens often. Nathan prefers to save his cards for when he needs them or for finishers, whichever comes first.
Weapons: Garren Rouzer
Abilities: Garren has the power to use Undead Cards in the Garren Rouzer. Aside from his Change Stag he has the Fire Fly (giving the next attack fire powers), Upper Frog (strengthening uppercuts), and Bullet Armadillo (strengthens bullets).

Skull Banisher: A simple rider kick with Nick’s foot charged in black energy.

- A cellphone with a number research contacts
- Red Diamond: A motorcycle made for use with Garren. Nick refuses to touch it.
History
Nathan has been writing since he was a boy. While he did show interest and skill in sports and other fields, his parents could just never manage to get him off of their old typewriter. He would get home from school and just write out murder mysteries, churning them out whenever he feels like it. Nathan walked lazily through life, moving from job to job. When he gave a damn about a job he was often quite competent, but he’d still usually get fired for being lazy. He briefly got married to a woman named Meredith Cowell and had a daughter with the woman when he was 21, but the two realized that they simply couldn’t work together as a couple and divorced amicably. As he had to raise Danni part time, Nathan put pen to paper and wrote his first book, Heat Wave. This caused two events; it caused Nathan to become rich and famous and gave birth to the character of Nick Heat.
The Nick Heat books became a massive success, and through his publisher Nathan published some of his earlier books but none of them did well in the slightest. Nathan soon became annoyed when he realized that people liked Nick Heat more than anything else he wrote, so he churned out several more Nick Heat books to fulfill his contract of six more books for the character; Summer Heat, Frozen Heat, Naked Heat, In Heat (a prequel story; Nathan told his publishers the double meaning wasn’t intentional but it really was), Heat Rises and Dead Heat. Dead Heat killed off the character because Nathan had slowly grown to hate the character and felt there was nothing left for him in the character.
At the release party for Dead Heat he was called in by NYPD for his help in a murder case based off of one of his early, less liked books. Here he met Kate and started working with her on a volunteer basis. As the two began to work together Nathan penned his new series, with the main character, Erica Storm, based on Kate. About two years ago the two got hitched. At some point during this he managed to get ahold of the Garren Rouzer but he doesn’t remember how thanks to liquor. Things were turning around in life for Nathan.
One day, King went to a murder site with Kate for a job, business as usual. Beforehand the biggest problem they had was arguing over whether a six month anniversary counted or not. But then Nathan saw the body. The ME and other (non-Kate) detectives saw only a dead blonde woman on a way to an audition; Nathan saw the dead body of his ex-wife. Nathan was stunned, unable to speak and just barely able to be walked into the police car. Someone splashed Nathan in the face to try and get him to snap out of it. This caused the first emergence of Nick Heat. Nick Heat was uncontrollable; while everyone agreed he was force for good he little regard for people and could also make situations work. This got worse once Nick got Skull.
OOC Stuff
Anything Else: He changes personalities by being splashed with water, even if the water only hits his mask/armor. Nick doesn’t know he’s not real, but Nathan knows full well what’s going on when he switches, he’s just not in control. In some cases he will try to switch back. Rain can cause Nick and Nathan to constantly switch back and forth.

Sample RP: Nathan sat at a table, playing a game of Fruit Ninja on his phone. Kate was likewise trying to keep herself entertained. The two were sitting at a collapsible table in a Borders, with copies of Storm Rising, Storm Season, and Deadly Storm stacked up on display. A cardboard stand-in of a blonde woman holding a pistol and an electric blue tie was on the left side of the table, with the obligatory stand-in of Nick Heat on the other side. While they set out to find a different looking blonde as a cover model for Erica Storm, the publishing company found a Tom Cruise lookalike for Nick Heat. There were fans lined up at the doors of the bookstore, all of whom were screaming and holding books. An employee walked up to the two.
“Five minutes Mr King” she said.
“Thank you” Nathan said, putting away his phone. He looked over to Kate in the other chair. “Are you sure you want to sit here for an hour as I sign autographs and do nothing else?”
“Please” Kate said, “the great Nathan King at a book signing? Entirely sober? Hoarding off Nick Heat fans? This is something I had to see.”
“I’d rather be at a crime scene” Nathan said, seeing a parade of fans in red suitcoats. “I bet you ten bucks they’ll ask for a new book even though he’s dead.”
“Deal” Kate said as the mob of fans entered the store.
“Are you going to make a new Nick Heat book?!”
