Our world is actually two: Daylight, the reality you know, and Twilight, the world of the dead and gone. Twilight is home to your restless spirits, your poltergeists, your benevolent ghosts, et cetera. However, some of these spirits can get a little violent. And when the dead interfere with the living, that's where we make a stand.
We are the gatekeepers, the Bound, the walkers in the night. We should be dead, but we yet live, and we have but one mission: to keep you all safe from that which wants you to join them.
~~~~~~~~~
The idea is that these 6 guys are all people who, for all intents and purposes, should be dead. Maybe they were shot several times, or caught in a feeding frenzy, or something like that. At the moment of their death, they were visited by a being known as a Geist, a ghost that has separated from the human it once was, and in return, has gained immense power. They struck a deal with the Geist, and have returned to the world of the living, with the ability to see and interact with the denizens of Twilight. The Geist lives in their body, giving them life and power.
Each Geistman transforms using a Keystone, or something that was important to the Geist before their death. For example, a Geist who is soaking wet and draped in seaweed might have a polished ivory walrus tusk as his Keystone, or a Geist who was a big game hunter might have a hunting rifle.
Geists are rather unique in appearance. For example, a Geist might be a man wearing a fedora with bleeding bullet wounds and a outfit reminiscent of a 1930's gangster, or a crying dog wearing a mask. They don't have to be humanoid. Be creative.
Geists are attracted to people who have had contact with Twilight before. Someone who's seen ghosts before, or interacted with the unquiet dead. Each Geistman can work in both Twilight and Daylight, and one does not affect the other. For example, a Geistman could be fighting in Twilight, lobbing grenades and shit, but the explosions would have no effect in Daylight.
Their mecha only operate in Twilight. They are animals representative of their Geists, as their Geists, actually transform into these mecha (but don't have to look the same as the mecha), and have a strong steampunk motif. The team shares this motif.
