History
Mariko always wanted to be an idol since she was little, but she always feared that she couldn't due to what her parents believed came first: her samurai training. Always training hard, Mariko was said to be the one of the most powerful decendant of the family in years, mostly due to her high power and skill when it came to Mojikara. When she was old enough, she began working at a cafe on the eighth floor of the Don Quixote building in Akihabara as a part-timer. When she heard that an idol group, AKB48, was being formed she jumped at the chance and attended the first audtion for the group.
However, due to all the stresses of her job, her training, and the auditions, she figuatively choked, and failed the auditions. So she returned to her job at the cafe, where she shared her story with the other customers as a simple talking point. Much to her surprise, hundreds of customers wrote to AKB48's producer, Yasushi Akimoto, requesting that she get a second chance at the audition. Akimoto then came to Mariko and gave her permission to join AKB48 on the condition that she could remember and perform all 12 songs and coreographies that were performed at the theater in four days. She spent those next four days practicing, and she made her debut on January 22, 2006 and making an appearance in AKB48's second single, "Skirt, Hirari" (unlike everyone else, who performed for "Sakura no Hanabiratachi", the group's first single).
Since then, she has been rising up as one of AKB48's most popular numbers, managing to somehow balance her new life as an idol with her continuing samurai training, and occasionally volunteering at the cafe that she used to work at as a cook and waitress, finally feeling that she's reached her dream.

"Oh! Mariko-chan!" the owner replied, coming out from the kitchens. She wasn't too old, being in her mid-fifties, but she had the appearance of a youthful grandmother. "It's good to see you!" she told her, taking the idol into a hug. "How long has it been?"
"Six months," Mariko said. "I'm sorry I couldn't visit sooner, but we've been super busy lately, especially with the new members having arrived..."
"No, no, it's quite all right!" Obaa-san told her. "I'm just glad you're still thinking of us! Would you like anything?"
"Actually... I was wondering... I have some free time right now. Is it all right if I come back to work?" the idol asked her, catching Obaa-san by surprise.
"Are you sure? I wouldn't mind, but what of your idol work?"
"I'm sure they'll understand... after all, even though I'm an idol now... I don't think I can ever truly leave this place. I just love it too much," Mariko told her with a smile.
The owner smiled back at her. "Well, go and get an apron, dear..."
Mariko nodded, and walked back to the kitchens so she could get ready for the customers she'd soon be serving...
